For me, the beginning part of the story, before the war begins was so important. I really drew me in and made me see the characters as not just humans as opposed to mice as depicted, but as humans that actually had a life before the Nazi’s. Every other book I have read talks just about concentration camps and maybe life afterward, but this is incredibly refreshing and would be even without the comic book aspect of it- although that too is a nice change and definitely draws me in more. I think the fact that the story not only humanizes them on a personal level but also from a mouse to human level in ones mind shows that this book is brilliantly done.

I agree that by starting off the book by getting you into the normal every day life of the characters really helps you connect with this story in a way that would not happen in a book that goes straight to the horrible story's of concentration camps. I think this is because you can connect to the life story's of the characters where you can not connect to being in a concentration camp.
